As the International Day against Homophophia, Transphobia and Biphobia draws closer, several nations have started preparations of events to commemorate the day. The affair which falls on May 17 every year is an effort to celebrate sexual and gender diversities across the globe.

Bangkok will have the Art and culture Centre lit up in the colours of the rainbow and their theme this year is “Bangkok: The City of Equality.” The trans community in Zambia is organizing a social gathering with an open dialogue with as many parents and opinion leaders as can be found. The community hopes to use this platform to create a better understanding of what it is to live as a trans person in a homophobic African setting.

Kenya is taking this year’s IDAHOT online and will be engaging in various discussions to create awareness on the issues affecting LGBTI people as well as continue to lobby for the decriminalization of same, trans, inter and bi sex relationships. In the West African state of Nigeria, a website will be officially launched to provide a platform for LGBTI persons to interact as well as discuss the issues that affect them without fear of ramifications of the law.

Lebanon has planned to commemorate IDAHOT with the publication of flyers highlighting the concerns and plights of the LGBTI community all over the world.

The event in its 11th year running was first celebrated in 2004 to draw the attention of policy makers, media and international bodies to the violence and discrimination LGBTI people all over the world were being subjected to.
