World Leaders Decry Xenophobia Attacks in South Africa as Nations START campaigns against their Products

The Xenophobic attacks in South Africa that have continued to raise a tumult worldover seem to be intensifying by the moment. The violence in the Durban area is directed at African foreigners living and working within South Africa.

According to the locals, the foreigners have taken over jobs that should be taken over by the locals leaving them unemployed and in poverty. Several world leaders and celebrities have publicly spoken out on the ongoing violence that has left six dead.

The President of the Republic of South Africa Jacob Zuma who had maintained taciturnity on the issue finally broke his silence art the end of last week. In a televised statement, Mr Zuma said, “These attacks go against everything we believe in. The majority of South Africans love peace and good relations with their brothers and sisters in the continent.”

These statements were made shortly before the President visited a refugee camp in the Chatsworth area within Durban. During the visit, Zuma assured the refugees that he would do everything within his power and the violence would soon come to an end. Below are some of the statements made by leaders across the globe in relation to the ongoing attacks in South Africa.

MUGABE- I would want now to express our sense of shock, disgust as we abhor the incidences which happened in Durban. The act of treating other Africans in that horrible way can never be condoned by anyone.

We, the people of Zimbabwe standing in solidarity with our brethren in Africa, strongly condemn and denounce the cruel, senseless and gruesome xenophobic slaughter of foreign nationals and the looting of their properties in South Africa.

Also, earlier in the week, West African based terror group also released a video through You Tube warning South Africa to bring the violence to an end or risk an attack within 24 hours. However, with the elapse of 24 hours and no attacks, many think the threat was nothing but a bluff. The video also communicated the group’s intention to attack all South African embassies in West Africa.

In related news, many African nations including Uganda have started campaigns to boycott all South African products including MTN, SABMiller, Woolworth and Shoprite. to bring the violence to an end or risk an attack within 24 hours.

However, with the elapse of 24 hours and no attacks, many think the threat was nothing but a bluff. South Africa is one of the leading destinations for LGBTI asylum seekers in Africa and many community members have resettled there in search of greener pastures and non-descriminative laws.  With the ongoing xenophobia attacks in the South African nation, the LGBTI community across the continent has also extended their well wishes for safety to their comrades.
