Shortly after Michael ole Tilal, the County Commissioner in the central town of Nyeri announced a crackdown on sex workers, a dozen of them are feared to have been arrested at Whiskers Park in the Majengo slums according to Police Boss Charles Rotich.

A credible informant from the area who prefers anonymity says they are not aware which police station the sex workers are being held, whether they were charged or if they have been released.

The raid is alleged to have taken place at Cloud Dreams, Happy Times, and Bells which are just a few blocks away from a gay sex workers organization branch office.

According to one of Kenya’s leading dailies, Mr Tilal said that there has been a rise in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) sex workers around the Majengo slums and Kimathi Street, targeting popular joints and taxi operators. He insisted that homosexuality and sex work is against the values of Nyeri people and they are working around the clock to restore ‘order’.

Efforts to find out the whereabouts of the gay sex workers are still underway and several organisations have come together to find a permanent solution for such unwarranted arrests.
