ILGA is the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association, an umbrella organisation of more than 1200 member organisations in all continents and articulated in six regions, i.e. ILGA-Oceania (Aotearoa/New Zealand, Australia and Pacific Islands), ILGA-Asia, ILGA-Europe, ILGA-LAC (Latin America and the Caribbean), ILGA North America and Pan Africa ILGA. Established in 1978, ILGA enjoys consultative status at the UN, publishes an annual world report and a map on legislation criminalising or protecting people on the basis of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity or recognising their relationships.

ILGA’s mission is:

  • To act as a leading organisation and a global voice for the rights of those who face discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression and intersex.
  • To worktowards achieving equality, freedom and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people through advocacy, collaborative actions, and by educating and informing relevant international and regional institutions as well as governments, media and civil society.
  • To empower our members and other human rights organisations in promoting and protecting human rights, irrespective of people’s sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression and intersex and to facilitate cooperation and solidarity among ILGA regions and members.
  • To promote the diversity and strengths of LGBTI people around the world.
  1. The Job

This is an exciting full-time position based in Geneva, Switzerland within the team of ILGA. In consultation with the UN Programme and Advocacy Manager, the post holder will be responsible for ILGA’s work with the United Nations Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures.

Main tasks 

  1. Monitor the work of Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures for developments and opportunities relevant for LGBTI communities.
  2. Support ILGA member organisations in their submissions to and advocacy with the various Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures on LGBTI issues, both electronically and in person in Geneva.
  3. Work collaboratively with those other organisations working on LGBTI human rights within the UN.
  4. Assist in advocacy and coordination at the UN Human Rights Council, including facilitating the drafting of statements, arranging awareness-raising side events, and supporting engagement in interactive dialogues and general debate.

Main Job requirements 

  1. Excellent knowledge of the UN System, especially in relation to the Treaty Bodies and Special Procedures, ideally accompanied by direct experience in working for a relevant government department, NGO or UN Agency. Knowledge of the Human Rights Council is an asset.
  2. Knowledge of the international LGBTI movement and related human rights issues. First-hand experience in an LGBTI organization is highly desirable.
  3. Fluent English, both written and oral. Fluency in Spanish and French are also highly desirable. Other UN languages an asset.
  4. Availability for international travels related to the implementation of the programme.
  5. Gross salary

The salary scale for the post is in the region CHF 60,000 – 66,000 (gross annual salary including holiday pay) depending on experience. The organisation offers 25 days annual leave, a contribution to lunch expenses, and covers local transport. Some relocation support to Geneva is also possible.
