Can You Be Queer and Religious? Something We Could Reflect On This Lent Season.

Members of Women of Faith in Action (WOFA) in association with Faithful Catholic Souls yesterday attended mass in Kampala in a bid to mark the beginning of lent.

Diane Sydney Bakuraira the Co-Founder WOFA says “This is a good time for us to reflect on our spirituality as queer women and rethink where we stand with our religion. We need to do more good deeds to support each other and pray even harder because the world is in tears with everything that is going on.”

Lent is the 40 weekdays from Ash Wednesday until Easter. It is a period observed by Christians as preparation for Easter, involving fasting and penitence.

“For me lent is usually a time to bond with God even more, I use this season to reach out to family and friends in need. Another thing I love about lent is the thrill of finally getting to celebrate Easter which usually feels like a second Christmas.” Says Phyllis Wanjiru a member of both organisations.

Some of the guidelines for lent state, that on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays of Lent, everyone of age 14 and up must abstain from consuming meat. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, everyone of age 18 to 59 must fast, unless exempt due to a medical reason.
