Statement Commemorating All Saints’ Day 2023 From Organisations Affirming in Faith

On this sacred occasion of All Saints’ Day; Women of Faith In Action (WOFA), Faithful Catholic Souls, EAVA Artists and Universal Coalition of Affirming Africans Uganda (UCAA-UG), gather in spirit to commemorate the lives of the saints who have gone before us. As we reflect on the teachings of Christ and the universal commandment to love one another, we find inspiration to reaffirm our commitment to inclusivity, compassion, and understanding.

In the journey of our faith, we acknowledge the challenges that have marked our journey, particularly the existence of discriminatory laws, specifically the recently enacted including the Anti-homosexuality Act, 2023 of Uganda. We recognise the pain and marginalisation experienced by our LGBTQ siblings as a result of these laws, and we stand united in our conviction that discrimination has no place in the teachings of Christ.

In the spirit of the commandment to love one another, we affirm that God’s love knows no boundaries, no ifs or buts. Our faith teaches us that every individual is a beloved creation of the Divine, deserving of love, dignity, and respect. As followers of Christ, we are called to embrace a love that transcends societal norms and prejudices, breaking down the walls that seek to divide us.
We acknowledge that diversity is a divine gift, our faith is not a weapon for discrimination but a source of strength for advocacy, justice, and love.

It is a shame that religion, a source of solace and guidance for many, has been manipulated to peddle homophobia. It is important for faith leaders to revisit the teachings of Christ, recognizing that the essence of Christianity lies in love, acceptance, and compassion. Let your pulpits be spaces where the message of inclusivity resounds, challenging the narrative that has perpetuated homophobia. Leaders should lead by example, fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, feels welcomed and embraced within the loving arms of the faith community.

Fellow believers, we urge you to engage in introspection, allowing the light of love to enlighten any shadows of prejudice that may linger within our hearts. Let us embody the true spirit of Christianity by extending kindness, understanding, and acceptance to all. In doing so, we become ambassadors of a faith that transcends societal biases and embraces the diversity of God’s creation. Together, let us dismantle the walls of prejudice constructed in the name of faith and rebuild a community that mirrors the unconditional love exemplified by Christ.

To the government of Uganda, we call for the repeal of the Anti Homosexuality Act, 2023 and acknowledge the inherent dignity and rights of every citizen. It is upon the government to ensure that the laws reflect the principles of justice, equality, and respect for human rights. Together, as a diverse and united faith community, we strive to create a future where the rights and dignity of every person are upheld, echoing the profound message of love embedded in the teachings of Christ.

May the grace of God guide us, the love of Christ inspire us, and the communion of saints surround us as we journey together towards a more inclusive and compassionate world.
